The Cheat Sheet

Intro

One of the most important parts of progressing and building your trick list is using different sized approaches, edging positions and edge types depending on the trick you are trying to learn. If you use the same edge position and edge type for every trick you will hit a progression barrier because certain tricks may not function correctly or as efficiently with the wrong variables. Browse the list below to give yourself a starting point. With the ideal sized approach, edge position and edge type you should learn the trick much easier.

Remember these are just starting points and what we think are the ideal variables needed to land the tricks. These are not set in stone but should give you something to work off of. Read the following information about edge types, edging positions and approach sizes so you better understand how to use this index.

Edge Types

Wakeboard Edging Technique - Progressive Edge ApproachWakeboard Edging Technique - Ollie Edge ApproachWakeboard Edging Technique - Trip Flip Edge ApproachCertain tricks require more or less line tension or even a tripping motion at the wake. A Progressive Edge ideally is paired up with tricks that require line tension to flip or to get pop. An Ollie edge is a lower line tension approach that is often used for wake to wake spins and grabs so pulling and passing is easier. The Trip Flip Edge is an aggressive approach that flattens and then changes edges to create a tripping motion at the wake. If you see any of these three edge types paired together with one another the first edge listed is how you start the approach combined with the next edge listed as ride through the wake, i.e., a Toeside Frontside Off Axis 540 requires an Ollie edge to start the approach and tripping motion at the wake to get into proper position. So, its edge type is an “Ollie + Trip Flip” in the table below.

Edging Positions

Wakeboard Approach Technique - Seated Edging PositionWakeboard Approach Technique - Middle Edging PositionWakeboard Approach Technique - Tall Edging PositionThe three edging positions alter how you use your legs at the wake but also increase or decrease the leverage on the line as you edge in. A seated position has less leverage which produces a slower edge on the approach but enables the rider to push hard at the wake using legs to get height rather then the catapult created by a taller more edgy position. Typically a seated position is used when handle passes are present. The Tall edging position is ideal for Load and Release style inverts, taking your tricks way out in the flats or where line tension and catapulting is needed to execute the tricks. The middle position is used when you need a good combination of tension and legs to, for example, execute a grab on a load and release style flip, i.e., a Melan Heelside Back Roll to Revert.

Approach Size

By using a small, medium or wide approach you will enhance the Edge Type used for each trick. A tantrum is a good example of this. If you are using a short or medium approach to learn a tantrum you won’t have enough time or speed before the wake to switch edges to get tripped into the flip and the trick will not function correctly. If you use the ideal “wide” approach for a tantrum you will have plenty of time to build speed, flatten, switch edges and then pop at the wake. Make sure you use the correct size approach so the edge type functions correctly.
